Afterschool Enrichment Activities

Army Youth Program in your Neighborhood (AYPYN)

Mission: To partner with school districts/organizations to provide quality and high interest after school programs based on the resiliency research for Army Youth attending secondary (middle, junior high, and high school) schools off the installation.  Program operates within a minimum of two hours.  West Hoke Middle operates Tuesday through Thursday from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM with bus transportation available to all students.

Pay close attention to meeting times. Student may need to have a second activity.

Thursday: Art Design, 6th Grade Math Counts, BETA, Dance, Fitness, Fayetteville State Talent Search, Spanish, Archery, SGA, and Homework Assistance!

6th Grade Math Counts  K. Notestine knotestine@hcs.k12.nc.us A national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contest.  Thursday 
Anime T. Siner tsiner@hcs.k12.nc.us Design and expression with cultural art. Also, have a fondness for Japanese Anime and Manga. Students discuss favorite shows and comics, and they work in teams to use their critical thinking skills to be creative and innovative. Tuesday 
Battle of the Books H. Bridges hbridges@hcs.k12.nc.us This program is for middle school students in grades 6-8. Students read books from a list established by the state Battle of the Books committee, and then compete in quiz-bowl style tournaments to test their knowledge of these books. Tuesday

This is a Hoke County mandated club for middle schools. Students will learn the basics of how to debate as well as how to compete in debate competition. Tuesday

Presidential Challenge Fitness E. Davis edavis@hcs.k12.nc.us This is a web-based program where students are “challenged” to do 60 minutes of physical activity each day. There are several benchmarks to the program and students can earn badges, certificates, and medals for accomplishing different levels of fitness. We utilize a military style program to teach kids about the elements of fitness and nutrition as well as emphasizing the importance of an active lifestyle. We also promote self awareness and civic responsibility. Students can create an account online as they log their daily activities and earn points toward their goals. We also take responsibility for our participants and students remind one another that we are representing The President of the United States! Tuesday & Thursday

STEM S. Schrock  sschrock@hcs.k12.nc.us Students who participate in STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) will create prototypes, learn the language of engineering, and also compete in statewide competitions. Students will have to draw out and then build their designs. Students will also complete parts of the Science Olympiad competition with categories such as: Experimental Design, Helicopter, Robot Cars, Wheel Vehicles, Music, Crime Busters, and Simple Machines. Thursday 
Student Government Association S. McGirt smcgirt@hcs.k12.nc.us We will be the voice of the students. This organization will be made up of a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer (elected position), and Homeroom Representatives. We will seek out volunteer opportunities within the community and the school. We will learn about responsibility, business, and finance by opening the School Store. Students will take advantage of fundraising activities and determine an appropriate school activity for funds. All students will know Robert's Rules of Order and how to correctly run an organization meeting. Thursday 
Tiger Hospitality  C. Williams cmwilliams@hcs.k12.nc.us Tiger's Hospitality Club will allow you to explore this fast moving and ever changing industry. You will be exposed to food sanitation and safety, French cooking terms, basic knife skills, cooking techniques, food temperatures, item and menu development, recipe conversions, candy making, basic cake decorating, and making other items.  Tuesday

After school: to cover sports and other events. 
Writer's Success V. Hasty vhasty@hcs.k12.nc.us Students will come prepared to work on improving their literacy skills! We will complete energizing activities that will lend themselves well to remediation of the Language Arts Common Core State Standards. The students will engage in writing their very own stories and learn the steps to publish their work by the end of the school year Tuesday
